President orders appointment of commission to probe disappearances during the 30 years of conflict: President Mahinda Rajapaksa on July 26 directed Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga to appoint a commission to look into the incidents of disappearance that have taken place during the 30 years of conflict. Announcing the President's order, the President's media unit said his move to appoint such a commission is a clear indication of his unwavering commitment to ensure that Human Rights are well protected in the country. Army is planning to further reduce the number of troops in Jaffna peninsula, says Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya: The Army spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya on July 24 said that Army is planning to further reduce the number of troops it has stationed in the Jaffna peninsula. The Army has taken a decision to move troops from 13 small military camps located in the Walikamam sector of Jaffna District to the Palaly Cantonment in northern edge of the peninsula. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) on July 12 had asked the Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya to reduce the military presence in northern Sri Lanka prior to the upcoming provincial council polls. Constant vigilance over fund raising by LTTE front organizations necessary, says Minister of External Affairs Professor G.L. Peiris: Minister of External Affairs Professor G.L. Peiris told a visiting European Union (EU) delegation on July 18 that Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) front organizations continue to raise funds in foreign countries and therefore, sustained vigilance over such activities is necessary. He reiterated this when he met the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with South Asia at the Ministry in Colombo. Colombo Page, July 19, 2013.

Implementation of recommendations made by the LLRC to pay compensation to the war affected residents of Northern Province begin: Implementing the recommendations made by the Lesson Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC), a program to pay compensation to the residents of Northern Province affected by violence during the war has initiated. Under the first phase of the program, President Mahinda Rajapaksa on July 11 symbolically handed over compensation to the families of people who lost loved ones and property and sustained injuries. Sri Lanka signs maritime cooperation agreement with India and the Maldives: Sri Lanka on July 8 signed a trilateral agreement with India and the Maldives to cooperate on maritime security in the Indian Ocean region, reports Colombo Page. During the second National Security Advisor (NSA) level meeting held in Colombo on July 8, the three neighboring countries agreed to cooperate in carrying out surveillance, anti-piracy operations and curbing illegal activities including maritime pollution.
