The Criminality Of Nuclear Deterrence

By Professor Francis A. Boyle *

The human race stands on the verge of nuclear self-extinction as a species, and with it will die most, if not all, forms of intelligent life on the planet earth. Any attempt to dispel the ideology of nuclearism and its attendant myth propounding the legality of nuclear weapons and nuclear deterrence must directly come to grips with the fact that the nuclear age was conceived in the original sins of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945.

By Ramesh Jaura *

Reputed to be an ardent campaigner for a nuclear weapons free world, ICAN has yet again called upon the powers-that-be to ban all nukes threatening the very survival of planet Earth and entire humankind. The fervent appeal by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons coincided with the UN high-level meeting on nuclear disarmament in New York.

The past few days have witnessed catastrophic explosions across Baghdad, a church brutally bombed in Peshawar, and a mall invaded in Nairobi. I know there are real differences between these places and their politics. It's clear al-Shabab is not al-Qaeda is not the Pakistani Taliban, but these differences fade in the face of such actions.

When Whole Becomes Greater than the Sum of its Parts

Earlier this year we had visited many biosafety level (BSL) III laboratories in India where one of the latest diagnostic tools were available to do drug susceptibility testing (DST) for tuberculosis (TB). One red-coloured sticker on these diagnostic tools caught our attention: UNITAID. This organization not only raises 70% of its core funding by innovative financing mechanisms such as by levying a small fee on airline tickets, but also has made a difference differently when compared with other traditional donors.

When Germany is Christian, is India Hindu?

By Maria Wirth *

Though I live in India since long, there are still some points that I find hard to understand – for example why many so called educated Indians on TV discussion forums become agitated whenever ‘Hindutva’ is mentioned. The majority of Indians are Hindus. India is special because of its ancient Hindu tradition. Westerners are drawn to India because of it. Why then is there this resistance by many Indians to acknowledge the Hindu roots of their country? Why do some people even give the impression as if an India that values those Hindu roots was dangerous? Don’t they know better?

Here is Why Sharia Law Has no Place in Britain or Elsewhere

By Nahla Mahmoud *

There are many reasons why this needs to be said, starting with a personal trigger. I was interviewed by Channel 4's 4thought.tv programme which was broadcast about my opinions on 'What does Sharia Law have to offer Britain'. I realised that I was the only one out of seven people interviewed that was clearly against Sharia and for a secular state. Activist and gay Muslim Omar Kuddus who was also interviewed regarding the same topic, agreed that 'Sharia' discriminates against homosexuals and would threaten his safety and civil rights.

How The American People Stopped A US war On Syria

I write this article as the US war machinery that geared up once again to hammer another poor country with deadly military blows in the name of achieving humanitarian goals, has been stopped for the moment in its bloody tracks. This is a unique and historical occasion and would like to accordingly make some observations including very personal ones about the protests and marches against war – a very important factor in making the administration realize that they were facing defeat in the US Congress - that I was a part of. I'm a Citizen of India - a country with many positive attributes, but a poor country, a third world country – and I have called the United States of America home for more than a decade.

By Abdus-Sattar Ghazali *

The seven-million strong America Muslim community was shocked to know that the New York Police Department (NYPD )has secretly designated mosques as "terrorist organizations." The Associated Press reported on August 28, 2013 that the designation allowed the police to use informants to record sermons and spy on imams, even without any evidence of criminal activity. According to the Associated Press report , designating an entire mosque as a terrorism enterprise means that anyone who attends prayer services there is a potential subject of an investigation and fair game for surveillance.
