President Mahinda Rajapaksa requests Tamil leadersto find a national solution and achieve reconciliation: Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran on December 21 claimed that there is an attempt to form a new Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) which will operate with the backing of the Government. "The latest we hear is that a former LTTE 'military commander' is being commissioned to restart an LTTE outfit subservient to the powers that be. Thus the White Van drama could now be enacted by a different cast," Wigneswaran said. Colombo Gazette, December 22, 2013.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa requests Tamil leaders to come together with the Government to find a national solution and achieve reconciliation: President Mahinda Rajapaksa delivering a speech at the final budget debate in Parliament on December 20 made a request to the Tamil leaders of the opposition to come together with the Government to find a national solution and achieve reconciliation. The President requested the leader of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) R. Sampanthan and Chief Minister of Northern Province C.V. Vigneswaran to join hands with the Government to create national harmony. He asked the opposition to correct the Government's path by presenting constructive criticism. TNA raises objections to the manner in which DIG of Police was appointed to the Northern Province: The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) on December 13 objected to the manner in which Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police was appointed to the Northern Province. TNA parliamentarian M. A. Sumanthiran pointed out in Parliament referring to the Constitution that a DIG had to be appointed to the Province only in consultation with the Chief Minister. He said this process had not been followed in the appointment of the new DIG to the North. Pujitha Jayasundera was appointed DIG. Colombo Page, December 14, 2013

Police deploy thousands of Tamil speaking officers to the Northern and Eastern Provinces: Police have deployed thousands of Tamil speaking officers to the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Police media spokesperson Senior Superintendent of Police Ajith Rohana told the media that 900 Tamil police officers and 1,500 Sinhala police officers fluent in the Tamil language have been deployed to police stations in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. He explained that the Tamil speaking citizens in the North and East areas could then get their statements recorded in Tamil. Colombo Page, December 5, 2013.
