Pakistan: Time for Shias to Leave

It is a massacre alright. Sunni extremists, aligned with Al-Qaeda and the Taliban, are killing Shias by the dozens in Pakistan.

I was yet to compile the list of the 106 (mostly Shias) killed in the twin bomb blasts in Quettalast month, that the news of another bomb blast killingyet another 84 (mostly Shias) in Quetta came over the wire. As the Shia massacres in Pakistan gain momentum, the State, including the Superior Courts, appear completely impotent.

Sri Lanka: Crime And Punishment

There is a feeling of outrage over the latest revelation of Channel 4 story on Sri Lankan army’s brutalities in the anti LTTE operations in North of the country, a territory which was the stronghold of LTTE. There is no doubt that Sri Lanka was a fighting one of the biggest battle for its survival against a fascist organization which rarely cared for human being and butchered them like animals. There is no denial in facts that LTTE used child soldiers and Sri Lankan army complimented it when they ran out of soldiers in their army to combat the LTTE pressure.

Parliament approves amendments to Terrorist Financing Act: Parliament on February 8 approved the draft bill to amend the Terrorist Financing Act. The draft bill when presented to Parliament on February 6 got hung up in the definition of the word 'terrorist' when the opposition pointed out that the word 'terrorist' had not been defined clearly. The Leader of the House and Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva clarified to the House who a terrorist is today and according to the Minister's definition, a terrorist is a person who is directly or indirectly involved in any terrorist activity or a person who aids and abets him. The Act is amended to prevent collection of funds for terrorist organizations. Colombo Page, February 7, 2013.

US GDP Data: Cause for Concern?

By Peter G. Hall Vice-President and Chief Economist EDC

Uh-oh. Readers of this column know how much stock EDC Economics puts in the strength of the US economy. Last week’s preliminary glimpse at fourth quarter US GDP was a pretty icy shower, even for the pessimists. The consensus view was for a meagre 1.1% increase for the quarter. Instead, it rang in at -0.1%. Is this a major jolt to the 2013 forecast for the engine of the global economy, or is there a good explanation for the sudden about-face? (If so, it had better be a good one).

I’ve been staying out of most world events as of late, preferring to watch things unfold silently as there are so many that seem to have all of the answers. I don’t claim to have any answers, but I sure do have a lot of questions. There is a good chance that many of you have the same questions that I have. Sometimes, the questions are more important than the answers. In this 21st Century, there are so many of our leaders that will give us the answers to any questions we ask, they just aren't the right answers. In fact, they lie continuously.

On the night of Friday January 25, I was glad to have the opportunity to see a film screening of Kamal Hassan’s spy thriller ‘Vishwaroopam’ and while not a crazed cine fan like many others in the audience, it was a pleasant occasion to see Mr. Kamal Hassan himself grace the event. Personally, it was the first time I saw an actor whose Tamil movies I have watched and enjoyed since childhood.

What Oslo Conferences Mean For Nuke Abolition

A meteor blasting into the atmosphere over Siberia (on February 15), injuring about 1000 people with debris, provided a graphic warning of the risk of a larger meteor, or even an asteroid, hitting earth. About the same time that the 10 ton meteor entered the earth’s atmosphere, an asteroid 15,000 times larger whizzed past planet earth. If the asteroid instead of the meteor had hit us, it could have wiped out civilization just as an asteroid hitting the earth 65 million years ago created climatic consequences that wiped out the dinosaurs.

North Korea’s response to the United Nations Security Council's expanded sanctions on January 22 by threatening to resume nuclear tests and failure last November of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to persuade the five recalcitrant nuclear powers to sign the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapons-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ) have focused attention on the atomic threat facing the Asian region that is fast emerging as the centre of the global economy.
