Dhaka Court awards death penalty to eight HuJI-B militants including its 'chief' Mufti Abdul Hannan: A Dhaka Court on June 23 awarded death penalty to eight militants of banned Islamist outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B), including its 'chief' Mufti Abdul Hannan, and meted out life sentence to six others for bombing to death 10 people during Pahela Baishakh (Bengali New Year) celebrations at Ramna Batamul in Dhaka city on April 14, 2001.

The death row convicts of the outfit are 'military commander' of HuJI-B Mufti Abdul Hannan, Maulana Akbar Hossain alias Helaluddin, Maulana Mohammad Tajuddin, Hafez Jahangir Alam Badar, Maulana Abu Bakar alias Selim Hawlader, Mufti Shafiqur Rahman, Mufti Abdul Hye and Arif Hasan Suman. Those who were sentenced to life imprisonment are Maulana Yahiya, Maulana Shawkat Osman alias Sheikh Farid, Maulana Abdul Hannan Sabbir, Maulana Abdur Rouf, Shahadat Ullah alias Jewel and Maulana Abdur Rouf. BNP, JeI and HeI should be kept out of elections for perfect elections, says Information Minister Hasanul Huq Inu: Information Minister Hasanul Huq Inu on June 16 said in Parliament that Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and Hefajat-e-Islami (HeI) should be kept out of elections for 'perfect' elections. The Minister said elections will not be perfect with BNP, JeI and HeI as these parties are not democratic. These parties are like formalin. The Minister recommended holding a national dialogue to exclude BNP, JeI and HeI. New Age, June 18, 2014.

Cadres of PBCP-Janajudhho and GMF trying to regroup in Kushtia and Chuadanga District, say Police: The operatives of outlawed Purbo Bangla Communist Party (PBCP-Janajuddho) and Gono Mukti Fouz (GMF) are trying to regroup in Kushtia and Chuadanga Districts, Police sources revealed. Police conducted drives in different areas of the two Districts on May 29-30 and arrested five cadres of the two banned outfits. Of them, three were arrested in Kushtia while the rest in Chuadanga. Mobarak Hossain's War Crimes trial concludes: The trail proceedings of Mobarak Hossain a leader of Brahmanbaria Awami League was concluded on June 2. International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) may deliver verdict in the War Crimes case against Hossain any day now. The three-member ICT-1 led by its Chairman Justice M Enayetur Rahim kept Mobarak's case on CAV [Curia Advisari Vult, a Latin legal term meaning verdict could be delivered anytime] after hearing two petitions submitted by the prosecution.
