Pratham USA announced on April 9 that internationally acclaimed journalist and author, Fareed Zakaria, has joined Pratham's national board of directors.

Host of CNN's flagship foreign affairs program, Editor-at-Large of Time, Washington Post columnist, and a New York Times bestselling author, Mr. Zakaria has been described as "the most influential foreign policy adviser of his generation." Since 2008, he has hosted Fareed Zakaria GPS, which airs on Sundays worldwide on CNN and brings viewers around the globe in-depth interviews with world leaders, newsmakers, and analysts who examine the world's toughest challenges.

Commenting on his decision to join Pratham's board of directors, Mr. Zakaria said, "Pratham works hard to address perhaps the single greatest challenge in India - education. And it does so with intelligence, effectiveness and integrity. I'm proud to be associated with it."

The Pratham USA national board that Mr. Zakaria joins includes prominent business and industry leaders from the South Asian community.

"It is an absolute privilege to welcome Fareed to our national board," said Mr. Dinyar Devitre, executive chairman of Pratham USA. Devitre added, "As Pratham approaches its 20th year of delivering a large scale, low-cost, and replicable model for driving measurable change in learning outcomes for underserved children in India, Pratham USA, with its network of 14 chapters across the United States, continues to play a critical supportive role. Fareed is a big, bold thinker, and he will be a force for good in Pratham's work to improve the basic learning experience of underserved students in India".

Pratham was established in 1994 to provide pre-school education to underprivileged children in the city of Mumbai. Madhav Chavan and Farida Lambay co-founded the organization with support from UNICEF and the Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Together, they built a grassroots team around a simple mission: "Every child in school and learning well." Today, with an estimated budget of $21 million and a presence in 19 Indian states, it is India's largest non-governmental organization in education.

During the 2013-14 school year, Pratham has reached 800,000 underprivileged children through its flagship Read India program, which imparts fundamental reading and arithmetic skills. In addition, the organization has reformed education for an estimated 2 million children through partnerships with State governments.

Pratham USA is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to building awareness and raising resources for education reform in India. Pratham USA has chapters in 14 US cities, with supporters representing a range of individuals and organizations that share a strong personal commitment to improving child literacy.
